A Trip to Denver

I was so fortunate to have a long weekend in Denver, touring Breckenridge in the Rocky Mountains and then visiting the NICU at Denver Children’s. Thank you to Lynn Cavaliero and her husband Rich who played tour guides in Breckenridge and to Lynn and her staff who welcomed Kathi Randall and me for the day in their NICU.

Children’s has a combination of private patient rooms and more open areas with patient spaces in a pinwheel design. The unit has so many well designed features and is a wonderful place for families and staff. We were especially impressed with the milk lab, managed by Beth Gabrielski, and staffed 14 hours a day by milk techs. All the breastmilk feedings for 24 hours are prepared each afternoon by the milk techs in the lab. Kathi and I were mesmerized by their efficiency and great technique. A milk lab with trained personnel meets the guidelines set by the American Dietetic Association and the Joint Commission for aseptic milk preparation, provides quality, consistent feedings and minimizes the risk of error or infection. They welcome tours or calls if you are interested in their single family rooms or the milk lab!
